[Clayart] down firing

At temp I turn off the kiln and let it cool to about 1800.  then I turn one burner on low and open the damper so the kiln stalls at 1800.  leave it for about twenty minutes.

Then repeat this three times.  What I am doing is slowing the cooling process through the critical 1900-1700F cooling period.  That is when the red appears.  I have done the 1700 to back to 1900 and it too works.

Shaner red was the same problem, but we did not know about the cooling in 1970.  I have several Shaner red pots that are bright Ochre yellow.  Ken Ferguson loved that glaze.  And cursed the heavens when it was Ochre.
