I suggest using the kiln closed up and for clay use only. My favorite small heater is the oil filled electric radiator. It is portable, very warm and easy on the dollars. I set my water pail on top of the heater (be careful of the air vents, do not cover them) , and love the warm water for washing hands and throwing. I have installed a propane ceiling furnace in my farm studio. Well worth the $400 and it heats my space in about 15 minutes. I do face -20 F on some days, and love the fine furnace. It is vented out the side-wall of my studio and I do not have to worry about roof chimney filling with snow.
