[Clayart] Interesting Article about Sand

Hi Jim,
Some 30 plus years ago along highway 95, Hixton to Blair Wisconsin, a sand mine was opened that provided a specific sand needed for as I was told, dumping down oil wells to support oil production in the Mid-Eastern part of the World. Now those special sand hills are completely gone and empty pits remain.
One could in ignorance be of the opinion that "they" had enough sand over there.
Relate to Mel needing to take sand to Dubai.

For a materials gathering field trip in the Rio Verde of Arizona I would assign the students to take a sample of sand bar river sand to add to a clay body. Then make a pot or sculpture with the clay.
After firing, these pots were set on a shelf and over time the students could observe the fired objects deteriorate from a succession of "Lime Pops" caused from the various forms of calcium that had eroded from the surrounding mountain strata.
Of course and applauded, intrepid students always saw opportunities for "uncontrolled surface treatment effects" for their efforts.

Misneach,

David Woof................................................Of course my snarky little Raven-Haired Muse is always seeking "uncontrolled surface treatment effects" and with no complaints the creative little Vixen succeeds admirably........ But sand is not added as an option except for late evenings on wind swept Beaches.....................................................................................................................................

Just read this article today that contradicts things I had been led
to believe The explanation the author gives makes good sense
me also.

That being said, I remember Mel talking about needing to take sand to
Dubai. Mel- If you have the time to read this, can you chime
in??
