Thanks for all that!

Just a few words about clay and glass. We are in the business of  
bonding two (and sometimes many) materials together that have  
different CTE's (coefficient of thermal expansion). When we get it  
right it's a great result. When we get it wrong it's most times  
dismissed as good enough. We can now usually predict when there is a  
problem and even make adjustments in most cases using calculation. The  
problem with using random glass is we don't know the constituents so  
we cannot predict or correct.

When I was a student at art college in the 60's I used to make ash  
trays with glass bottoms - almost flat. A friend to had a coffee house  
decided he wanted some and I sold him a few dozen. There was no 2nd  
order - they were all stolen by his customers.
