Ron,

I agree with everything you said. I will add that I had a friend who died from silicosis, but behavior is so much a part of this and he was a tile guy.

That is what I'm addressing. The metals are gram for gram, vastly more toxic. But the behavior—walking on clay trimmings, for instance—has been for me, in my experience working with so many new potters in a professional shop, the thing you have to pound into their heads. Heavy metal toxicity is much easier to get across, but silica is too easily ignored. In my reading, folks who lived for long periods next to dirt roads, as I did in my youth (I'm white trash from Southeast Oklahoma, where I lived while my dad was incarcerated in McAlester prison), also get silicosis.

Hi Joel,

I agree that silicosis will down grade all potters health but mostly to a
small degree if minimal precautions taken.

It is easy to see the effects because they show up on a chest xray.

I think the heavy metals are a greater danger because they have an effect in
small amounts which, for the most part, are difficult to detect. There is
still very little information on how these heavy metals work in combination
with each other. Cancer is rampant along with many "old age" problems but we
don't seem able to pinpoint the reasons.

I say - be informed - understand the materials we use and protect our lungs
as much as possible.
