Woof sez: Revisiting my files I thought to repost the following, with updated additions.
Among the cash flow wonders are mugs I call 'Wabi Sabi Ware' because they are of a very tight red clay body of my own experimental formulation.*
Rather loosely executed, and in Woof interpreted sgraffito and incised drawings related to "ask Alice when she's ten feet tall."
Then slathered in a painterly manner with stains over the scratched thru Ron Meyers White Slip and over glazed with a tinted translucent "Straw Glaze" that pools in any carved or incised impression to give an enhanced depth and sense of relief.
The Meyers White Slip crackles where thicker, and breaks thru on areas around the handles in a lichen effect that relates to and compliments the organic drawings.
Not dangerously sharp edged, but gnarly enough so one is conscious of the action and aesthetics of this usually unconscious part of mug drinking activity and definitely related to why one is holding this mug to one's lips.
At ^ 6 OX, 0.5% absorption, many glazes fit this body including those mastered and published by John and Ron. I claim bragging rights for what my "red porcelain" can do.
However, though this red body isn't translucent, it does ring with a clear bell tone. It's the mug hands reach for and though one can't see the wings, they fly off the display!!!
Misneach,
Woof...........................The deep true red color is from a California red fire clay that fires red, and needs combining several fluxes to form a eutectic which draws the body into a dense vitrified state at ^ 6 OX.
