[Clayart] Hole in the bottom of a bowl on a potter's wheel

Sorry, I did not understand what it means to compressing in the bottom of
the bowl?
I throw clay on the wheel like a cone with round bottom and lower it from
above, and then raise and lower, but do not press it in the bottom to the
wheel specially.
When the bowl is done, I start the stack back and forth inside the bottom
of the bowl, stopping in the center. It's right?
