Here, here.  I agree totally.  We all, of course, look at the world from
our own position in it and from what I see a lot of "professional" potters
well fit that.  Maybe they should spend a little time researching just what
it would cost to set up a studio - assuming, of course, that they can
comply with all the "requirements" in their area.  A kiln room for example
- out of the question for even many pros.

I came from a background where we made virtually everything we used and
used native clay yet it has cost me a substantial amount to set up what I
have.  Since shutting down Brown's Pottery Hiddenite over 2 years ago and
buying a house I have spent a substantial amount getting ready to - someday
- getting back to "playing in the clay".  Over 20K to put the slab,
electrical, building, etc needed to do so - all by code  - even though I am
not in the city, I am close enough to maybe having a problem in the
future.  Virtually everything required my son and I could have done but
most was required to be done by "a licensed contractor" so the cost goes
up.  And as the cost keep going up for everything needed for a studio
potter co-ops or some such is the only way they have to go.The situation in
rural Minn is like night and day to the rest of the country.  And that has
a lot to do with the problem with our politics today. - jb
