[Clayart] Pricing

This subject could start some very long and insulting rants.   

I get upset, at those artists who price low. Those who swoop into the market.   They make great work.
They participate in shows, and win prizes.  Their work appears everywhere.  The public loves them.  They work hard, very hard.  Their work is very inexpensive.
They gain a following.  They sell tons of work at the fairs, often outselling their peers. They apply for and win every grant in the area, and they are honored with financial awards. 
They are named emerging artist of the year.  They are requested to give presentations and workshops.  They are real up and comers.

Then………… after four or five years, they quit.  They discover that there is no money.  No profit.  No reasonable return for their efforts.  They are burnt out.  They sell their equipment, their materials and their studios.   Then….They just disappear.     Then a client, a follower, or a collector will ask,  “Where are they?”    They are told that he artist has left the profession for higher expectations.  
The client walks away sad, and unhappy.   

I call these artists, Flash in the Pan artists.  They overshadow the hard working quality artist, who is in the profession for the long haul.

NO!!! You SHOULD be irritated!  So that potter’s getting $19?  After expenses, is that minimum wage?  I don’t think so!

This museum should be ashamed of themselves.  Even if the artist set that price, they should tell this person to charge a fair price.  It’s hard enough competing with third world potters who’ll work for a dollar a day, without having to compete with Americans working for a dollar a day!
