Crash cooling has some benefits. While in China, I witnessed a kiln being
opened immediately after being shut down. It was unbelievable. They just
opened a cone 12 firing and let the air rush in. The kiln was closed after
a while. I asked one of the kiln masters the benefit, and he stated that
it stopped any crystallization of the clear transparent glaze. The result
was a very clear and clean transparent glaze.

Hi,
Altho Terry's story shows a lot more gumption than I've got, I have gotten
in the habit of cooling as fast as a full-open damper will allow from 2300-
2000 for better copper reds; this was one of the sapient Karl Platt's
recommendations to avoid large agglomerations of copper crystals (i.e. the
justly reviled liver-red.)
