I like the wire coat hangers fine. I put up three big plates up on the vent over the kitchen stove about 30 years ago and they are still up there right now. We had a pretty good earthquake and a lot of attic work overhead on the chimney that the vent is connected. to.
I just went over and looked at them from below to see the hanger and it is as Mike described.
